Volunteer

EARN is always in search of dedicated, patient volunteers to help with administrative, development, and back-office activities. Our most pressing volunteer needs are for ongoing administrative and fundraising activities, including data entry, outreach and records administration. In general, we ask our core volunteers to commit to a minimum of three hours per week for at least 6 months, during regular business hours.

We do understand that a long-term commitment is not always possible, and we often have one-time and occasional opportunities that require volunteer support. These include preparing and mailing account statements, fundraising appeals, and print communications, as well as special events support. If you cannot commit to at least six months of weekly volunteer activity, we would love to add you to our volunteer e-mail listserv to keep you updated about upcoming needs and events.

Feel free to refer to the list of opportunities below, and let us know if there's a particular skill or task you'd like to focus on. Or just send us your name and email to receive volunteer bulletins!

Please keep in mind that we do ask long-term volunteers to make a weekly commitment for no less than 6 months. Core volunteer activities are scheduled during normal working hours.

Opportunities to Volunteer

One-time/Occasional Opportunities

Development Mailings (occasional)

About once a quarter, EARN does a direct mailing to donors and friends, keeping them in the loop on what’s happening, highlighting EARN in the news, and, particularly around the holidays, soliciting annual gifts. Mailings are a big task and we always need help with them. As they say, “many hands make light work”

Monthly Statement Mailing

Every month EARN sends out account statements to our Savers. This is an important step in our program cycle. The statements show the Saver both how much they’ve saved independently, as well as how much they’ve accumulated with matching funds. This can be a powerful incentive for Savers every month – keeping them motivated to save toward their goal. The first week of every month we do this mass mailing and are always looking for an extra hand or two to assist us.

Events

EARN occasionally hosts events for our friends and donors, Savers, and Alumni, and we often need v0lunteer help to make sure that guests feel welcome and everyone comes away inspired! Event support can include preparing materials, greeting guests, setting up event space, reaching out to potential sponsors, and more.

Ongoing /Long-Term Volunteer Opportunities

Weekly Office and Outreach Support

With over 1300 active account holders, EARN is like a mini-financial institution. And with that comes a fair amount of paperwork, outreach phone calls, mailing, etc. We are always looking for general administrative assistance – if you have a couple of hours per week to spare and would like to help us continue to deliver the best service to our Savers, this job may be for you!

Translation

EARN has an ongoing need for written translation assistance from English into Spanish or Chinese. If you are a native speaker of one of these languages and have experience with translation, we’d love to hear from you. (Native speakers only, please)

Instruction (Certified Financial Planners only)

EARN offers monthly “Saver Workshops” on a variety of financial subjects for EARN clients. These workshops are 90-minutes in length and include topics ranging from “What’s an IRA and Why Should I Care?” to “Estate Planning: Not just for the Rich.” Instructors for these workshops are provided through the SF Chapter of the Financial Planning Association. If you are a Certified Financial Planner interested in teaching a course, please contact Saundra Davis of the FPA at Saundra@sagefinancialsolutions.org
